IKO Shingle Repair: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
IKO shingle repair in San Jose typically runs $340 to $780 for a standard repair on a single-family home, depending on how many shingles failed and what the roof deck looks like underneath. Most repairs take under two hours, and we keep IKO-compatible colors and profiles on our trucks so we can usually handle it in one visit. You’ll know a shingle has failed when you spot bare patches in the roofline, find granules in your gutters, or see a shingle flap lift in the wind during a storm off the Santa Cruz Mountains.
What we see most often in San Jose neighborhoods like Willow Glen, Cambrian, and Almaden Valley is not a bad product. It’s age, heat cycling, and poor installation from a previous roofer. IKO shingles are solid material. But a hot summer followed by a wet El Niño winter will find every weak point in a roof, and shingles are almost always the first thing to show it.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
We work on every IKO shingle line installed in San Jose over the last 20 years. The most common by far are the IKO Cambridge architectural series, followed by the heavier Royal Estate and Dynasty lines. Older homes in Rose Garden and Naglee Park sometimes still have the old three-tab Marathon shingles, which IKO phased out years ago but still color-match through current Cambridge stock in most cases.
Identifying your shingle is the first step. Look in your garage or attic for a leftover bundle wrapper. IKO prints the series name and color code right on it. No wrapper? We can match by measuring the shingle exposure and checking the color profile against current IKO stock. The one compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: a Cambridge shingle from 2015 is not always the same thickness as a Cambridge from 2023. IKO has shifted base mat weights over time. That’s fine for a repair, but it means we don’t just grab any IKO bundle off the shelf. We match era-specific dimensions so the patch doesn’t look like a patch.
We also stock aftermarket IKO-compatible ridge caps and starter strips. For repair work, an OEM IKO Cambridge cap on a Dynasty roof is usually not the move. The profiles don’t sit the same. We’ll tell you plainly which product matches, and why. Brennan Roofing Co San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with IKO. We carry IKO material because it’s what half the roofs in San Jose were built with, not because we get a kickback to push it.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules in the gutter or at the downspout base. IKO shingles shed some granules when new, but heavy accumulation after 8-plus years means the mineral surface is eroding. On a sloped roof facing south or west, San Jose sun accelerates this faster than most homeowners expect.
- Curling or cupping at the shingle corners. This is moisture absorption into the mat combined with heat stress. On a roof with poor attic ventilation, we see IKO shingles curl at year 12 to 15 that would have lasted to year 20 with better airflow.
- Cracked shingles along the tar line or nail strip. Thermal shock, plain and simple. A shingle that hits 140 degrees on a San Jose August afternoon and drops to 40 degrees the next storm night will eventually develop hairline splits. That’s the wear point we see most on IKO Cambridge installations from the mid-2010s.
- Shingles lifting in wind more than neighbors’ roofs. This usually means the sealant strip has broken down, not that the shingle itself is defective. Once the adhesive bond fails, IKO shingles will lift at wind speeds that wouldn’t touch a sealed roof. It’s repairable, but you don’t want to wait through a winter storm season.
- Visible bare spots or missing tabs in one section. That’s either impact damage from a branch or a failed nail line from the original install. We regularly find entire courses of IKO shingles in East San Jose where the original installer shot nails too high and the shingles simply let go years later.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Jose, you’re looking at these installed ranges for IKO shingle repair work:
- Single localized repair (3 to 6 shingles replaced): $340 to $520
- Multiple repair areas or ridge cap replacement: $480 to $680
- Repair with roof deck patching (rotten plywood section underneath): $650 to $780
- Full slope re-shingle (a whole side of the roof, not a patch): $1,800 to $3,400 depending on slope, accessibility, and tear-off depth
What drives the range on a repair: how many bundles the area takes, whether the underlayment or decking is compromised, whether we’re working on a two-story cut-up roof or a simple ranch near the West San Jose border, and whether we’re matching a current IKO color or working from older stock that’s harder to source.
Every quote is a written number before any work starts. The price on that sheet is the price. It does not move at the door. Parts and labor are split out on the estimate, no mystery line items. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails within one full year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it applies to every IKO repair we do in San Jose.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things yourself: look at the roofline from the ground with binoculars, inspect how much granule material is in your gutters, and take photos of any visible damage before calling us. That helps. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
What you shouldn’t do is get up on a two-story roof with a bundle of IKO shingles, a nail gun, and a YouTube tutorial. Steep roofs, tile-to-shingle transitions, and flashing details are where DIY repairs go wrong, and a bad patch leaks worse than the original problem. You also lose whatever warranty protection the repair would have had. If you want to inspect the roof surface, a ladder against the eave with a safe angle is your max. Past that, this becomes work for a trained roofer.
Call us at (669) 238-2101 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician to assess it. The assessment comes with a written number before any work begins.
FAQs
In San Jose’s climate, properly installed IKO Cambridge architectural shingles last 18 to 25 years, with Dynasty and Royal Estate running closer to 22 to 28. Poor attic ventilation or a bad original install can cut that to 12 to 15. If you’re seeing failures before year 15, the problem is usually not the shingle. Call (669) 238-2101 and we can tell you what you’re actually looking at.
Individual IKO shingles can be repaired: we lift the damaged tabs, cut the old shingle free, and replace it with a matched piece. That’s true for cracks, curls, and granule loss in a contained area. If the same failure pattern covers a whole roof slope, a patch job just buys you a year and you’re better off budgeting for a slope re-shingle. We’ll give you both options in writing. Call (669) 238-2101 for an honest assessment.
Most IKO shingle repairs on a single-family San Jose home take 60 to 90 minutes on site. If the repair requires decking replacement underneath, you’re looking at a half day. Weather permitting, we schedule this type of work within the week. Call (669) 238-2101 and we’ll give you a real window, not a vague one.
Yes. Our trucks carry the most common IKO lines for San Jose: Cambridge in the standard colors, Dynasty, and Royal Estate. We also stock ridge caps and starter strips that match those lines. If your home has an older or less common IKO color, we source it same-week. We also work with GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed stock for homes with mixed-brand roofs. Call (669) 238-2101 and we’ll verify what you have before we come out.
